Petland & Puppy Mills?

Both the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and In Defense of Animals (IDA) have followed the ownership chain of dogs sold in Petland stores across the country, and discovered that a large number of these animals come from puppy mills. Puppy mills are intensive breeding facilities that keep pregnant dogs in overcrowded and often unsanitary conditions. While many puppy mills are licensed breeding facilities (hence Petland’s claim that they only buy from licensed breeders), this industry has little regulatory oversight. To increase profits, many of these facilities breed female dogs every time they come in heat. The result is sick puppies and even sicker parents.

Although Petland stores are franchise operations, and, theoretically, each owner is free to make decisions regarding the items they sell, it appears that Petland dictates that the stores purchase a number of their puppies through animal brokers such as Hunte Corporation, which, evidence shows, buys from puppy mills across the country. In fact, in a class action lawsuit, disgruntled franchisees claim that they were forced to accept sick animals sold to them by Hunte Corporation.

There are five Petland stores in the DFW metroplex (a list of these stores and their vets is at the bottom of this page). In an effort to convince these stores to stop selling animals and, instead, to sponsor adoptions, a group of DFW-area animal advocates formed TEP, Texans Exposing Petland. When the newest area Petland store, located in Plano, opened in October of 2008, protesters began a weekly picketing and leafletting campaign. With the assistance of the HSUS, IDA, and local groups Animal Connection of Texas (ACT) and the North Texas Animal Rights Network (NTARN), animal lovers have kept the heat on Petland.

Please join us in our Petland protests. Please join us in our Petland protests. We have kicked off on-going Petland protests, every Saturday, at all 5 of the Dallas/Fort Worth stores. Please see the Calendar link for times. Please join us, or just boycott Petland and encourage your friends to do the same. As long as selling animals is profitable, Petland will keep Hunte Corporation and the puppy mills it buys from in business.

If you or someone you know are in the market for a companion animal, please “adopt, don’t shop”. Dallas and Fort Worth shelters alone were forced to kill more than 40,000 dogs, cats, puppies and kittens last year - because there were not enough homes. A large number of these animals are purebred. A great place to find a wonderful companion is: http://www.find-a-pet.org, which has links to the local shelters.
