August 11, 2001 meeting
Animal Connection of Texas Agenda
August 11, 2001, 11:00 a.m.

LEGAL We will be appealing the district court's ruling that the UT- Institutional Animal Care and Research Advisory Committee is a "medical committee", as defined under the Texas Health and Safety Code, and so is not subject to the Texas Open Meetings Act.

SHELTER Although we are getting some positive signs from city council, it is important to keep focused. Attend town hall meetings. Let your councilperson know that an adequate shelter for our homeless animals will cost $11 million. This is the first step to conquering our pet overpopulation problem. The homeless are counting on us.

Next two town hall meetings:

West Dallas Multipurpose Center, 2828 Fishtrap, August 14th at 6:30 to 8:20 P.M. (Ed Oakley) M. L.K. Rec. Center (Seniors Building)

2922 M. L. King Drive, August 16th at 6:30 to 8:30 P.M. (Leo V. Chaney)

For more town hall meetings view this link: http://dallascityhall.com/html/2001-2002_budget_town_hall_mee1.html

CIRCUS Ringling's final Dallas demo is Sunday, August 12, 2:30 p.m. at the corner of Wichita and Houston. Signs and posters will be provided. (ACTivists were harassed by DPD during the elephant walk. Formal complaints were filed.)

SWMC Our next UT event will be a formal affair. We will be (uninvited) guests at the HeartBall, UT's largest fund-raiser, at the Hyatt Regency on October 20. This is a great excuse to drag out your fancy clothes (or to discover what your thrift store has to offer). We will have bow ties and rhinestones for our four-legged escorts. Join the foxhound committee - and help plan our gala.

HUNTING Still in planning stages. Any updates? - working on advertisements in local papers

WEBSITE See Jill if you have any articles or pictures to add.

NEW ISSUES Farm Sanctuary Walk. Wendy has details.

MARY THE ELEPHANT Thanks to Cynthia, Wendy, Greg and Sherrie for traveling to Sherman and braving the heat to protest the treatment of the Branson magic show elephant. PETA fliers were passed out, signs were held, and the owners of the Majestic Theatre were invited to lunch. They declined - but thanked us for the "free advertising". We think they need more. A field trip to Branson has been suggested. Is anyone interested? Or should we focus on Sherman?

Tentative demo 8/25 meet at 8am at 75/Royal Lane to carpool up to Sherman, we are also looking in to finding a fair or carnival that Sherman might have to protest there.

QUEENIE FOUNDATION CANDLELIGHT VIGIL, Saturday, August 18, 2001, 6:00-9:00 p.m. at White Rock Lake's Flagpole Hill. Help table or just meet with other animal lovers as we remember and bring attention to the thousands of friends killed in our shelters. Loco, the little fellow who brought animal cruelty into the spotlight, will be there. - 6pm-8pm is Meet and Greet and 8-9pm is the Vigil - if you want to help set up early at 5pm call Enid 214-328-3332

STEPHENS PROTEST IN LITTLE ROCK. An international protest against Stephens Inc. will be held from October 27-29. (This is the financial group that bailed out the infamous Huntingdon Life Sciences.) Little Rock is pretty in October. ACT can organize a trip if there is enough interest. - visit www.october29.org for more info on what HLS does

Welcome to new board member Cheryl.

Have we lost our focus? What should ACT do to "get our groove back"? - discussed options on increasing membership: mailers, advertising in college papers, tabling at events - discussed not spreading ourselves too thin with too many issues - committed to demoing at the circus every performance next year, this commitment is a large one so we should keep that in mind when new issues come up in 2002

The Witness - award winning documentary by Tribe of Heart follows the ethical awakenings of a Brooklyn construction contractor. This is a journey of enlightenment and a testament to what one person can do.

People often say that humans have always eaten animals, as if this is a justification for continuing the practice. According to this logic, we should not try to prevent people from murdering other people, since this has also been done since the earliest of times.

Isaac Bashevis Singer

The human body, the very one you're sitting in right now, has no nutritional requirement for animal flesh or cow's milk. It functions superbly without them, and this includes producing healthy offspring. Mothers who do not give milk or dairy products to their children are helping their children stay healthy rather than depriving them.
